There are some four departments that you can expect to find in every modern law firm. It is the aim of this discussion to take a look at these departments. We will be seeking to understand the role of each department. These departments will have their own personnel or staff; we will also try to look into them. It is common to find some firms that do not make clear distinctions of these departments, sometimes not even bothering to assign a head for each. But they do tend to exist in some form: even if, in the smaller law practice firms, they turn out to be 'one-person departments.' The convergence of departmental functions is also not unheard of. This results to instances when, in smaller firms, one person could end up doing the work of two departments. Bigger law firms are more organized in this regard, however. They have a clear organizational structure, with department heads and staff properly identified in order to facilitate the equitable division of labor.

The first department that you are most likely to find in a law firm these days is their legal department. This is otherwise known as their main operations department. This is where you will find the roots of the legal practice and definitely the area where the earnings and the profits come from. Workers in this department can be categorized into the associates and the partners. These are fully-qualified attorneys, who do the actual legal work like representing clients in court, holding consultation sessions with clients, drafting binding legal documents and so on. Providing support for the partners and associates are often legal assistants and interns. These are usually people who are undergoing legal training, but who are not qualified attorneys. You will also find staff members in this department known as the paralegals. The routine tasks are delegated mostly to them. It is also common to find a secretarial or administrative department in law firms nowadays. This is where you will find all the secretaries of the lawyers as well as the typists who work on drawing up the documents. This department also often include the human resource officers employed by the larger firms. The other supportive staff members, such as the tea girls, the messengers and the guards also end up being put under the administrative department, for lack of a better department to put them in.

The third department that you can expect to find every modern law practicing firm is the information technology (IT) department. A network of computers is now a common sight to see in most law firms, considering the advantages of computerization. Since these computers need maintenance, it is important to make sure there are people who are knowledgeable about keeping the computers on track.

An accounting and finance department is also necessary for the functioning of a law firm. This department will take care of the financial aspect of the company, making records of the receipts and disbursements and compiling financial reports of the law firm.
