Team building is one of the latest craze in the business world. Over the past years, business leaders have chosen to hire people who have the ability to work as a team. Why so? Research shows that people who work in teams can accomplish more than a group of individuals working together. But not all team building activities are created equal. Industry experts have levelled criticism at the quick fix attitude that companies have adopted, in which they attempt to make their own team building activities.

For a team building event to be effective, it must:

Have work goals integrated.

It's not enough to plan a fun day of activities for your team. The team building event that you plan should help focus the members of the team on what's not working and what needs to happen for the team to work together.

Be one of an overall company goal.

You should plan team building activities and events as part of the company's plan for success. There is more to the event than just buggy riding. Team building events should be an ongoing, annual or semi-annual event.

Be planned by a team.

After all, the goal is to promote teamwork. The planning team should also have the behaviour that it wishes to promote.

Be followed up with some real work integration.

Having a team building activity and failing to follow it up would just be useless. To be meaningful, team building efforts must continue beyond the event day.

Be supported by rewarding teamwork.

Once you have a team that's working as a team, you need to reinforce that behaviour by rewarding it. Since teams work really well when they are recognized, you should have notices in the company newsletter, mark team accomplishments during corporate events, and the like.

If you are thinking that it's hard work to do all these, keep in mind that other companies do it too. You always have the choice of hiring a corporate events planner to help you get things going. But don't hire just anyone. Get a professional since he knows better.

Over the past few years, team building has become somewhat of a buzz word in corporate circles. There are a lot of corporate even planners that toss the term 'corporate team building' around willy-nilly as part of their marketing talk but their events don't always live up to the team building promise. In order for an event to transform and cement new ways of working together, it is essential to offer more than just lip service and a group tip to go fly-fishing.

Successful corporate team building events have a number of elements in common

There is an opportunity to see the roadblocks to successful communication and teamwork

The chance to see co-workers in unfamiliar roles and situations

The necessity to work together toward a common goal

You need support in order to forge productive new ways of working together

Good corporate event planners take those cut-and-dried concepts and turn them into a fun learning experience. The true geniuses in the corporate event world can create amazing and transforming events that will shake up your organization and wake up inspiration that you never knew existed in your company. How to bring your coworkers and employees together in new ways that highlight the strengths you know they have, and show them how to use those strengths to build a solid service or production team that simply can't be beat is what experienced planners of team building events are aware of.

There are many companies that specialize in corporate events and group tours. These companies come up with team building challenges that can be beneficial in highlighting how work obstacles are overcome by working together. Treasure hunts, a Spy Mission, and Boat Racing are just some of the examples of team building.

Other companies plan 'Service Days' that may include building a children's playground for charity or pitching in to completely renovate a home for a local charity. Regardless of this, the value of the day is in the lessons carried home at its end and by getting to know each other and working together as a team with unique members, they can then overcome anything.
